2011 Fantasy Fest

Traveling to Key West generally means sun, seafood, key lime pie and a mandatory photo op at the southernmost point of the country. This time of the year is a little different. A trip to the island right now all but guarantees a run-in with outrageously or scandalously costumed locals and tourists celebrating Fantasy Fest.

More than 50,000 people were expected to attend this year's festivities, which ran from Oct 21 through Oct. 30. Hurricane Rina threatened to put a damper on the parade and parties, but the National Weather Service later reported that the weakened storm would not directly impact Key West.

This year's theme was "Aquatic Afrolic."

Officials estimate the celebration, now in its 32nd year, brings in about $30 million into the Florida Keys economy, the Associated Press reports.
